Tips for the Astypalea to Naxos ferry

  • The flat bow (prow) area of a large ferry is usually accessible and offers outstanding forward views – one of the best spots to stand during harbour entry.
  • Sunglasses are essential on open deck in the Aegean – the reflected glare off the water is very intense, especially in the middle of the day.
  • Prices on Greek ferry routes are generally fixed by the operator – unlike airlines, there is no dynamic pricing that rewards booking at odd hours.
  • Once you arrive in Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades, the giant marble Portara gateway standing on a small islet at the entrance to the harbour is an unmissable landmark. The island offers the full range of Greek island experiences: long sandy beaches, mountain villages, ancient ruins, and a fertile interior producing excellent local cheeses and wines.
