Gythio to Kissamos Route Map

Map of Crete showing the ferry route south-east from Gythio to Kissamos.

Gythio to Kissamos is the crossing from the southern Peloponnese to the northwest corner of Crete, run by Seajets with the Aqua Jewel. It takes somewhere between six and a half and just under seven hours, calling at Kythira and Antikythira on the way down. The Aqua Jewel is a conventional car ferry rather than a high speed craft, which makes the open water stretch south of Cape Malea a good deal more comfortable.

Kissamos, also known as Kastelli or Kastelli Kissamou, is a working port town on the northwest coast of Crete in the Chania regional unit. The harbour itself is a modern one a couple of kilometres from the old town centre, so it is functional rather than scenic. Most arrivals are heading either east to Chania or west to Falasarna and the Balos lagoon, both a short drive from the port, with Elafonisi further south.

The route runs around three times a week in season and drops away outside it. Current timetable and fares are shown below. It is the only direct sea link between Crete and the Peloponnese, which makes it useful for anyone driving down the mainland rather than flying, and buses connect Kissamos with Chania in about an hour.

Tips for the Gythio to Kissamos ferry

  • Sea spray on the bow deck can be significant in choppy conditions; keep your phone and camera in a pocket or bag until conditions are calm.
  • When booking a multi-island itinerary, save a PDF or screenshot of each confirmation; email may not load reliably when you are at a small island port.
  • Do not leave valuables unattended in luggage – ferry saloons are busy places and opportunistic theft, while rare, does occur.
