Gythio to Diakofti Route Map

Map of the Ionian Islands showing the ferry route south-east from Gythio to Diakofti.

Gythio to Diakofti on Kythira is the shortest leg of the Seajets run down the Peloponnese coast, taking a little over two hours on the Aqua Jewel. The ship rounds Cape Malea on the way, so conditions can be brisk, though the conventional ferry handles it far better than a fast craft would. Vehicles are carried, which is what most people use it for.

Diakofti is Kythira's main ferry port, a modern purpose built harbour rather than a village, so there is little there beyond the quay. The wreck of the cargo ship Nordland sits just off the harbour and is the local landmark. Almost everyone heads straight on to Chora, the island capital, a short drive away, or to Kapsali below it and Milopotamos inland.

The route runs four or five times a week in season, making it the most frequent of the Gythio sailings. Current schedules and fares are shown below. The same ships continue south to Antikythira and Kissamos on Crete, and there are separate connections to Kythira from Neapoli further round the coast.

Tips for the Gythio to Diakofti ferry

  • A 40-litre backpack is the ideal size for island-hopping: large enough for two weeks' clothing, small enough to carry without difficulty.
  • If you have a connecting ferry from the same port, check the departure board immediately on disembarking and confirm the gate for your next vessel.
  • Mobile signal is generally good within sight of land but drops to nothing in the middle of longer crossings – plan your connectivity accordingly.
