Ios to Sikinos Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route west-south-west from Ios to Sikinos.

Ios to Sikinos is one of the shortest crossings in the western Cyclades, taking around twenty-five to thirty minutes. Fast Ferries, Hellenic Seaways and the local Maistros Santorini service all run it, using the Artemis, Dionisios Solomos and Maistros Santorini. Fares start around €3, which makes it one of the cheapest ferry tickets in Greece.

Sikinos is among the least-visited of the Cyclades, small and largely undeveloped with minimal tourism infrastructure. The port is Alopronia, a small harbour on the coast, with the main village of Chora and its kastro sitting up above and connected by a short road. Travellers come for the quiet, traditional village life and simple beaches rather than anything resembling a resort scene.

The link runs roughly once a day in season and much less often outside it, so it needs a little planning. Current sailings and fares are shown below. Sikinos is usually a stop on the Piraeus to Folegandros and Santorini line, which is what gives it most of its connections.

Hiring a car

Do you need to rent a car on Sikinos?

Probably not. Sikinos has just two settlements, the port at Alopronia and Chora 3.5km uphill, linked by an hourly bus. Only two small rental outfits operate on the island, with stock limited in August, so most visitors get by on foot and the bus. If you want the freedom, check Discover Cars.

Can you rent a car in Ios?

Yes. The port sits about 2km from Chora, with rental desks at both. A car isn't essential for the Chora to Mylopotas stretch, which is walkable and bus-served, but it's worth having to reach quieter spots like Manganari beach, roughly 19km to the south. Check current rates at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Ios to Sikinos ferry

  • The port at Ormos sits about 2km below Chora – roughly a five-minute drive, a 20-minute walk, or a short bus ride from the stop just along the road from the ferry quay.
  • Arrive at Ormos port at least an hour before departure in summer – traffic builds up around the port and you'll want time to secure a good deck or lounge seat before boarding.
  • Ormos port has its own supermarkets, cafes, ATMs and car or motorbike hire outlets, so you can wait comfortably, withdraw cash or pick up rental transport without leaving the harbour area.
  • If your sailing is cancelled, do not simply wait at the port indefinitely – go to the operator's office, confirm the next available sailing, and plan your overnight if needed.
  • In Sikinos, the double hilltop settlement of Chora – comprising the fortress village of Kastro and the adjacent Chorio – offers a wonderfully authentic Cycladic experience, with a Folklore Museum and traditional tavernas serving local dishes with capers. The port of Alopronia below is a sandy bay with a handful of traditional waterfront tavernas and a calm, unhurried atmosphere.
