Kea to Sikinos Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route south-east from Kea to Sikinos.

Kea to Sikinos is a very long ride on the Hellenic Seaways ferry Artemis, close to twelve hours end to end. The ship works the western Cyclades chain and calls at a string of islands before reaching Sikinos, so this is a full day aboard a conventional ferry rather than any kind of shortcut. Sort out somewhere comfortable to sit early on.

Sikinos is one of the least-visited islands in the Cyclades, sitting quietly between Folegandros and Ios with very little tourism infrastructure. Boats arrive at Alopronia, a small harbour on the south-east coast, with the hilltop Chora and its old Kastro quarter a short road journey above. People come here for empty beaches, walking and a genuinely slow pace.

The link runs only a couple of times a fortnight, and Sikinos is thinly served in general, so build in slack at both ends. Sailing dates, the operator and current fares are shown in the table below, starting around €19. Most itineraries reach Sikinos on the Piraeus to Folegandros and Santorini line instead, which is the more dependable way in and out.

Hiring a car

Do you need to rent a car on Sikinos?

Probably not. Sikinos has just two settlements, the port at Alopronia and Chora 3.5km uphill, linked by an hourly bus. Only two small rental outfits operate on the island, with stock limited in August, so most visitors get by on foot and the bus. If you want the freedom, check Discover Cars.

Tips for the Kea to Sikinos ferry

  • Air conditioning inside Greek ferries can be set very cold, especially in summer – keep a light layer in your day bag even in hot weather.
  • If your itinerary is time-critical (flight the next day), always choose the conventional slow ferry over the fast catamaran in summer – reliability matters more than speed.
  • Over-the-counter seasickness tablets containing dimenhydrinate are widely available at Greek pharmacies and are effective for most people.
  • In Sikinos, the double hilltop settlement of Chora – comprising the fortress village of Kastro and the adjacent Chorio – offers a wonderfully authentic Cycladic experience, with a Folklore Museum and traditional tavernas serving local dishes with capers. The port of Alopronia below is a sandy bay with a handful of traditional waterfront tavernas and a calm, unhurried atmosphere.
