Kavala to Agios Efstratios Route Map

Map of the north Aegean showing the ferry route south-south-east from Kavala to Agios Efstratios.

This crossing links Kavala on the Macedonian coast with Agios Efstratios, a small island in the North Aegean south of Lemnos. Seajets operates it with the Aquablue, and the passage takes a little over six hours. It is a daytime run for the most part, covering open North Aegean water with a call at Lemnos on the way.

Agios Efstratios, or Ai Stratis as it is usually known, is among the most isolated inhabited islands in Greece. There is a single small village, also the port, largely rebuilt after the 1968 earthquake, and beaches that stay empty for most of the year. People come for solitude and simple village life rather than sights.

The route runs a couple of times a week, with more sailings in high summer than out of season. The current timetable and fares are in the tables below. Because connections here are thin, it is worth checking your return before you commit to a date of arrival.

Tips for the Kavala to Agios Efstratios ferry

  • The flat bow (prow) area of a large ferry is usually accessible and offers outstanding forward views – one of the best spots to stand during harbour entry.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent are both considerably cheaper at a supermarket before you board than at island resort shops; stock up on the mainland.
  • Sea spray on the bow deck can be significant in choppy conditions; keep your phone and camera in a pocket or bag until conditions are calm.
  • The rear vehicle ramp opens while the vessel is still manoeuvring; do not go down to the vehicle deck until the ferry is fully docked and the ramp is secure.
  • Catamarans offer a faster crossing but have a lower wind-speed tolerance; in July and August, a booking on a conventional ferry is more likely to run on schedule.
