Ferry from Kavala to Prinos

Kavala to Prinos is the short mainland hop across to Thassos, run by Thassos Seaways and taking about an hour. It is a conventional car ferry crossing, so vehicles go over with no fuss, and the passage is short enough that most people stay on deck the whole way. This is the crossing to use if you are arriving in Kavala by road or air and heading straight to the island.

Prinos sits on the west coast of Thassos and is a working port rather than a scenic one, less picturesque than Limenas but perfectly functional. There is no particular landmark at the harbour itself; the draw is the island beyond, with its marble quarries, forested interior and long stretch of beaches. Taxis and buses meet the arriving ferries for onward travel round the island.

Sailings run roughly once a day, with more in high summer. The current timetable and fares are shown below. Thassos has two main ports, Prinos and Limenas, and the other mainland link runs from Keramoti, so check which pairing your ticket uses before setting off.

Tips for the Kavala to Prinos ferry

• Sunscreen and insect repellent are both considerably cheaper at a supermarket before you board than at island resort shops; stock up on the mainland.
• The smell of diesel and engine exhaust is stronger at the stern in summer heat; if you are sensitive to it, choose a bow-facing seat or the upper deck.
• Booking a multi-leg island-hopping itinerary in one session lets you verify that your connections are realistic before committing.
