Kavala to Piraeus Route Map

Map of the north Aegean showing the ferry route south-south-west from Kavala to Piraeus.

Kavala to Piraeus is the full length of the Hellenic Seaways North Aegean line, run by the Nissos Samos, and at around twenty six hours it is one of the longest single ferry journeys in Greece. The ship works its way down through Lemnos, Lesvos and Chios before turning for Athens, so you are effectively riding the whole line. A cabin is all but essential on a crossing of this length.

Piraeus is the port of Athens, a few kilometres southwest of the centre and one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe. It is spread across numbered gates from E1 to E12, with North Aegean arrivals at the northern end, so check your gate before planning the onward leg. The metro terminus at Piraeus station runs straight into central Athens, and there is a separate airport bus.

Sailings are roughly weekly, and the current timetable and fares are shown below. Most travellers making this journey break it at Lesvos or Chios rather than riding it end to end, and there is also a fast overland option via Thessaloniki if time matters more than the sea.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Piraeus?

Yes, several agencies meet passengers directly at the ferry gates (E1 to E12), so there is no need to arrange transport into central Athens first. It suits travellers continuing on to the mainland rather than islanders, since central Athens is only 20 minutes away and has good metro and bus links. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Kavala to Piraeus ferry

  • Four-berth cabins offer the best value if you are travelling as a family or small group; the cost divided between you is often comparable to a budget hotel room.
  • On routes operated by a single company, focus on choosing the right class of service rather than comparing operators.
  • Ferries from Piraeus depart from the main port of Athens, giving easy access to the Acropolis, the world-class Acropolis Museum, and the ancient Agora. The historic Plaka neighbourhood at the foot of the Acropolis hill, with its neoclassical lanes, Roman ruins, and traditional tavernas, is the most atmospheric place to spend time before or after your crossing.
