Kythnos to Kea Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route north-north-west from Kythnos to Kea.

Kythnos to Kea is the short northern hop of the western Cyclades chain, an hour and a half or so on the Hellenic Seaways ferry Artemis. It is a conventional car ferry, and at this length the crossing barely gets going before the coast of Kea appears. Foot passengers, cars and bikes all travel.

Kea, called Tzia by Greeks, is the closest Cycladic island to Attica and feels more like an Athenian weekend retreat than a tourist island. Boats arrive at Korissia on the north-west coast, a small harbour with a beach alongside, and the stone-built capital, Ioulida, sits inland on the hillside above. The island is criss-crossed by an unusually good network of restored walking paths, and the ancient stone Lion of Kea is a short walk from Ioulida.

Sailings run a handful of times a fortnight rather than every day, so check before relying on it. Dates, operator and current fares are shown in the table below, with prices starting around €6.50. Kea's main mainland link is with Lavrio in south-east Attica rather than Piraeus, which is worth knowing when planning onward travel.

  • The period immediately after the 15th August peak sees a rapid fall in demand; last-minute seats become available again from around the 20th.
  • Booking directly with the ferry operator's own website often gives you the same price as third-party sites and makes changes or cancellations simpler.
