Kythnos to Paros Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route east-south-east from Kythnos to Paros.

Kythnos to Paros is about five and a half hours on the Hellenic Seaways ferry Artemis, a conventional car ferry crossing east from the western Cyclades with calls along the way. It is a slow, old-fashioned crossing with deck space and a saloon, which many people prefer to the enclosed fast craft. Vehicles travel too.

Paros is one of the main hubs of the Cyclades and the boat berths at Parikia, where the harbour opens directly onto the town's whitewashed lanes. The Panagia Ekatontapiliani, the Church of a Hundred Doors, is a few minutes' walk from the quay and is among the oldest surviving churches in Greece. Naoussa, on the north coast, has the busier bar scene and the windsurfing beaches, and Pounta on the west side runs the short shuttle to Antiparos.

The crossing appears only a couple of times a fortnight, so it needs to be planned rather than assumed. Sailing dates, operator and current fares are shown below, starting around €13. Parikia is one of the best-connected ports in the Aegean, with frequent onward boats to Naxos, Ios, Santorini and Mykonos.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Paros?

Yes, and rental desks cluster right by the port in Parikia, most just a couple of minutes' walk from where the ferry docks. A car earns its keep here: nowhere on Paros is more than about 30 minutes' drive away, opening up marble-quarry villages and quieter southern beaches that the KTEL bus network doesn't reach directly. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars if you'd rather not rely on the bus timetable.

Tips for the Kythnos to Paros ferry

  • Pets must be kept in the designated pet area and may not enter passenger saloons; bring a lead and any food or water your pet needs for the crossing.
  • Greek ferries are generally safe and well-maintained; life jacket locations are posted throughout the vessel and a safety briefing sheet is usually displayed in cabins.
  • Noise from engines and bow waves makes conversation difficult on the outdoor deck when the vessel is at full speed; find a sheltered indoor spot for long conversations.
  • In Paros, the charming fishing village of Naoussa on the north coast is the best place to eat fresh seafood at family-run waterfront tavernas. The main town of Parikia has an impressive Byzantine cathedral built from the marble of ancient temples, and the island's beaches – particularly Kolymbithres with its sculpted granite rocks – are among the most striking in the Cyclades.
