Ferry from Rhodes (Rodos) to Chalki (Halki)

Rhodes to Chalki is a short westbound crossing, taking a little over an hour on the direct services and up to about two and a half hours on routings that call elsewhere first. Blue Star Ferries, Dodekanisos Seaways and SAOS Ferries all appear on the route, with the Blue Star Chios, the Dodekanisos Express and Pride and the small Stavros among the vessels. Fares start around eight euros, which makes it one of the cheapest hops in the Dodecanese.

Chalki is a very small island just off the west coast of Rhodes, with a single settlement, Emborio, that doubles as the port. Pastel and neoclassical houses line the harbour, left over from the island's sponge-diving prosperity, and the population today is tiny. There is little to do beyond swimming, walking and long lunches, which is precisely the appeal for most visitors.

Worth it if you're staying more than a couple of days, since the island is large and its two bus companies (Roda in the west, KTEL in the east) don't make it easy to combine both coasts in a day. Tips for the Rhodes to Chalki ferry

• Rhodes has two separate ferry ports: large car ferries such as Blue Star Ferries use Akandia, while Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans and small boats to Symi depart from Kolona, just outside the Old Town walls – check your ticket for the correct one.
• Akandia port is roughly a 20-minute walk from the Old Town and has no shelter, seating or toilets while you wait, so it is more comfortable to wait in town and take a taxi straight to your ferry.
• Arrive at least one hour before departure to allow time to check in, since boarding for ferries from Rhodes typically closes around 20 minutes before the scheduled sailing time.
• Pack a reusable water bottle in an accessible pocket – hydration is important in summer and onboard water is expensive.
• The bow (front) of the vessel experiences the most pitching in head-on swells; the stern tends to be smoother when seas are rough.
