Ferry from Rhodes (Rodos) to Leros (Lakki)

Rhodes to Leros is a northbound run of five and a half to seven hours, worked by Blue Star Ferries and Superfast Ferries with the Blue Star 2, Blue Star Patmos and Lefka Ori. These are large conventional ferries carrying vehicles, calling at islands such as Kos and Kalymnos on the way, which is what sets the timing. Fares start around €20.

Ferries on this route dock at Lakki, the island's main port and one of the more distinctive harbours in the Aegean thanks to its 1930s Italian-built Art Deco buildings around the waterfront. Leros is quiet and understated, popular with people looking for a less commercial Dodecanese island, and the Castle of Pandeli sits on the hill above the old town of Platanos. Tips for the Rhodes to Leros ferry

• Rhodes has two separate ferry ports: large car ferries such as Blue Star Ferries use Akandia, while Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans and small boats to Symi depart from Kolona, just outside the Old Town walls – check your ticket for the correct one.
• Akandia port is roughly a 20-minute walk from the Old Town and has no shelter, seating or toilets while you wait, so it is more comfortable to wait in town and take a taxi straight to your ferry.
• Arrive at least one hour before departure to allow time to check in, since boarding for ferries from Rhodes typically closes around 20 minutes before the scheduled sailing time.
• Cabin portholes cannot be opened; if you want fresh air overnight, leave the cabin door slightly ajar if there is a corridor fan, or use the deck sleeping option.
• The meltemi blows from the north-north-west; routes that run east–west are more exposed than those running north–south along a chain of islands.
