Rhodes to Kassos Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route south-west from Rhodes to Kassos.

Rhodes to Kassos is a long southwesterly crossing, taking between five and a half and nearly seven hours with Blue Star Ferries on the Blue Star Chios. The ship calls at Karpathos on the way, which accounts for most of the variation in timing. This is the conventional route that continues on to Sitia and Heraklio in Crete.

Kassos is a small, largely barren island south of Karpathos and one of the least visited in Greece, with minimal tourism infrastructure. The port and capital is Fry, on the north coast, a low-key harbour village where most of the island's life is concentrated. People come for genuine off-grid island days, the caves at Ellinokamara and Selai, or simply because it sits on the way between Karpathos and Crete.

There are a few sailings a fortnight, so this is a route to plan around rather than improvise. Current departures, durations and fares are shown in the table below. Kassos is also served on the same route from the Crete end, which is worth considering if you are travelling in that direction.

Official maximum fares on subsidised sailings

These are ceilings set by ministerial decision for public-service (PSO) sailings, quoted net of VAT and port dues. They are the most an operator may charge on a subsidised departure, not a fare on sale, and they do not apply to commercial sailings on the same route.

Hiring a car

Is it worth hiring a car in Rhodes?

Worth it if you're staying more than a couple of days, since the island is large and its two bus companies (Roda in the west, KTEL in the east) don't make it easy to combine both coasts in a day. The port is a 10-minute walk from Rhodes Old Town, with paid parking nearby. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Rhodes to Kassos ferry

  • Rhodes has two separate ferry ports: large car ferries such as Blue Star Ferries use Akandia, while Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans and small boats to Symi depart from Kolona, just outside the Old Town walls – check your ticket for the correct one.
  • Akandia port is roughly a 20-minute walk from the Old Town and has no shelter, seating or toilets while you wait, so it is more comfortable to wait in town and take a taxi straight to your ferry.
  • Arrive at least one hour before departure to allow time to check in, since boarding for ferries from Rhodes typically closes around 20 minutes before the scheduled sailing time.
  • If you need to change your ticket, it is usually cheaper to do so online than at the port ticket office, where a handling fee may apply.
  • A 40-litre backpack is the ideal size for island-hopping: large enough for two weeks' clothing, small enough to carry without difficulty.
