Skiathos to Volos Route Map

Map of the Sporades showing the ferry route west-north-west from Skiathos to Volos.

Skiathos to Volos is the busiest link between the Sporades and the Thessaly mainland, worked by Seajets, Aegean Flying Dolphins and Mantoudi Lines. The fast craft such as Eagle Jet 2 and Erato take a little over an hour, while the conventional Superstar Ii runs closer to two and three quarter hours with calls on the way. The slower boats carry cars, which the small fast craft largely do not.

Volos sits at the head of the Pagasetic Gulf and the ferry berth is in the middle of the city, a short walk from the seafront promenade and the tsipouradika that give the place its reputation. It is the natural base for the Pelion peninsula, with its beech and chestnut forests, stone villages and the narrow-gauge railway. Buses and trains connect on to Athens and Thessaloniki from the city centre.

Sailings run several times a day through the season, spread across the three operators, with a reduced service in winter. Current departures, vessels and fares are shown in the table below, starting around €25. If your sailing is full, the alternative mainland ports for the Sporades are Agios Konstantinos and, seasonally, Platanias on Pelion.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Volos?

Yes, with several agencies operating around the port, which sits in the centre of town rather than off on its own. Volos itself is easily walkable, but a car is worth having if you plan to explore the Pelion peninsula before or after catching a ferry to the Sporades. Compare options at Discover Cars.

Is it worth hiring a car on Skiathos?

Skiathos is small and hilly, with a public bus running a numbered route between the town and Koukounaries beach that covers most visitors' needs. A car or 4x4 is worth it if you want the quieter beaches reached by dirt roads, though free car parks at popular spots like Vromolimnos fill up by mid-morning in summer. Compare hire options at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Skiathos to Volos ferry

  • In July and August the port gets very busy with car queues and day-trip crowds, so arrive at least an hour before departure – earlier still if you are travelling with a vehicle that needs loading time.
  • Skiathos has no single ferry ticket office – each shipping company sells from its own booth near the corner of Papadiamantis Street, so check in advance which operator you are travelling with rather than queuing at the wrong window.
  • Head for Skiathos's New Harbour, not the Old Port used for boat tours and water taxis, when catching the Skopelos ferry – it is a short walk from the town centre and about 15–20 minutes on foot from the airport.
  • Electric scooters and bicycles are occasionally permitted on small inter-island ferries; confirm with the operator before you arrive at the port.
  • In Volos, the lively waterfront promenade lined with tsipouradika – traditional ouzo-and-meze bars – makes the city a rewarding stop in its own right. The city is also the gateway to the Pelion Peninsula, a region of chestnut-forested mountain villages, traditional stone architecture, and excellent beaches on the Pagasetic Gulf coast.
