Skopelos to Volos Route Map

Map of the Sporades showing the ferry route west-north-west from Skopelos to Volos.

Skopelos to Volos is the main link between this part of the Sporades and mainland Thessaly, taking a little over two hours on the Seajets and Aegean Flying Dolphins fast craft and up to nearly four on the conventional Superstar II. The Eagle Jet 2 and Erato handle much of the quicker traffic, while the slower boat carries vehicles. Fares start around €42 for the crossing.

Volos is a modern working city on the Pagasetic Gulf, capital of Magnesia, with the port sitting right in the city centre. The waterfront promenade lined with tsipouradika, the local tsipouro bars, is the thing most visitors remember, and the university buildings are close by. Most travellers pass through as the gateway either to the Pelion peninsula behind the city or onward to the rest of the Sporades.

The route runs several times a day in high season and drops back to a handful of sailings a week in winter. Current timings, operators and fares are in the table below. Volos is well connected by road and rail to Larissa, Athens and Thessaloniki, which makes it the usual mainland exit point for Skopelos.

Tips for the Skopelos to Volos ferry

  • Confirm your ticket says "Skopelos Town" and not "Glossa" or "Loutraki" – these are two separate ports on opposite sides of the island, roughly 25 kilometres apart by road, and boarding at the wrong one means an unplanned taxi ride across Skopelos.
  • Arrive at Skopelos Town port at least 30 minutes before your sailing – ferry companies close boarding shortly before departure, and if you are travelling with a vehicle allow closer to an hour to load.
  • Even if you have booked online, you will usually need to exchange your booking for a printed boarding pass at one of the ferry agency offices along the Skopelos Town waterfront before you can board.
  • Ferry cancellations are announced on the operator's website and app, and also through the Hellenic Coast Guard (limenarxeio) at the departure port.
  • In Volos, the lively waterfront promenade lined with tsipouradika – traditional ouzo-and-meze bars – makes the city a rewarding stop in its own right. The city is also the gateway to the Pelion Peninsula, a region of chestnut-forested mountain villages, traditional stone architecture, and excellent beaches on the Pagasetic Gulf coast.
