Anafi to Santorini Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route west from Anafi to Santorini.

Anafi to Santorini is the short hop west that most visitors to Anafi use, taking between about an hour and ten minutes and an hour and a half. Blue Star Ferries runs it with the Blue Star 1 and Blue Star Chios, and Maistros Santorini N.E. adds the Maistros Santorini on the local link. It is a straightforward daytime crossing with the Santorini caldera rising ahead as you approach.

Santorini's ferry port is Athinios, a working quay beneath steep caldera cliffs with no town attached, so onward transport up the zigzag road to Fira and Oia is arranged at the port. From there it is the familiar draw of clifftop villages, caldera sunsets and volcanic beaches on the south and east coasts. The old port of Skala below Fira is a separate landing used by excursion boats, reached by cable car or the donkey path.

This is the most frequent route off Anafi, running most days in season, with the current timetable and fares shown below. Fares start around seven euros. Santorini is one of the busiest hubs in the Cyclades, with fast and conventional links to Piraeus, Crete, Naxos, Paros, Ios and Mykonos.

Official maximum fares on subsidised sailings

These are ceilings set by ministerial decision for public-service (PSO) sailings, quoted net of VAT and port dues. They are the most an operator may charge on a subsidised departure, not a fare on sale, and they do not apply to commercial sailings on the same route.

Hiring a car

Is it worth hiring a car on Santorini?

Yes. The ferry port at Athinios sits about 7.5km below Fira up a steep, winding road; the bus takes about 25 minutes and a taxi costs many times the fare. A car lets you reach Oia, Akrotiri and the red and black beaches at your own pace without waiting for infrequent buses; rental desks operate near the port, and you can compare prices across local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Anafi to Santorini ferry

  • Return tickets on the same operator are sometimes cheaper than two separate one-way fares – compare both options before confirming.
  • When travelling with a motorcycle, book and pay for the vehicle space at the same time as your passenger ticket – vehicle spaces can sell out separately.
  • In Santorini, the clifftop villages of Oia and Fira offer the famous caldera views over the submerged volcanic crater, best seen at sunset from Oia's castle. The 214 steps down to Amoudi Bay lead to some of the best seafood tavernas on the island, and local wine tours offer a taste of Assyrtiko, the volcanic-soil white grape unique to the island.
