Tips for the Anafi to Piraeus ferry
- In an emergency, follow crew instructions immediately; the muster stations are marked on deck plans posted in corridors and at cabin doors.
- On routes served by high-speed catamarans, all seats are assigned – choose seats towards the centre of the vessel for the smoothest ride in choppy conditions.
- On rough crossings, secure your belongings before leaving your seat – bags and bottles slide off tables easily, and wet floors make a spill a hazard.
- Island-hopping itineraries that move in one direction (e.g. Athens to Rhodes via the Dodecanese) rather than back-and-forth are generally cheaper and less stressful.
- Ferries from Piraeus depart from the main port of Athens, giving easy access to the Acropolis, the world-class Acropolis Museum, and the ancient Agora. The historic Plaka neighbourhood at the foot of the Acropolis hill, with its neoclassical lanes, Roman ruins, and traditional tavernas, is the most atmospheric place to spend time before or after your crossing.
