Chalki to Tilos Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route north-west from Chalki to Tilos.

Chalki to Tilos is one of the shortest hops in the Dodecanese, taking about 35 minutes on the Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans, the Dodekanisos Express or the Dodekanisos Pride. The boat leaves Emborio, the little harbour that is effectively the whole of Chalki, and runs west across open water to Livadia. It is a quick, businesslike crossing on a fast craft rather than a leisurely deck day.

Livadia is the port and the main village on Tilos, set on a broad bay, and ferries dock right at the edge of it. Tilos is one of the least developed islands in the Dodecanese and has built a reputation as a walking and birdwatching island, with marked trails, quiet beaches and the Charkadio cave where fossilised dwarf elephants were found. The island's older settlement, Megalo Chorio, sits inland, but arrivals are all at Livadia.

The route runs a couple of times a week rather than daily, so it needs planning around if you are moving between the two islands. Current departure days, times and fares are listed in the timetable below. The same catamarans carry on through the Dodecanese chain, so Tilos connects onward to Nisyros, Kos and Rhodes on the same operator.

Tips for the Chalki to Tilos ferry

  • Duty-free shopping is not available on domestic Greek ferry routes; what you see in the onboard shop is ordinary retail pricing.
  • Some short-hop routes operate more frequent services on weekends than weekdays; check the specific day's timetable rather than assuming it is the same every day.
  • On quieter routes outside peak season, booking a day or two ahead is usually sufficient and gives you the flexibility to adjust plans.
  • When booking for the return leg of a day trip, remember that the last ferry of the day can fill up – book your return at the same time as your outward journey.
