Kos to Tilos Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route south from Kos to Tilos.

Kos to Tilos runs south through the Dodecanese, taking around an hour and a half on the Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans and up to a little over three hours on the conventional ferries. Blue Star Ferries, Dodekanisos Seaways and SAOS Ferries all serve the route, with vessels including the Blue Star Patmos, the Dodekanisos Express and Pride, and the Saonisos. Fares start around eight euros.

Ferries dock at Livadia, the main village of Tilos, on a bay with the harbour at one end. Tilos is one of the least developed islands in the Dodecanese and has built a reputation as a walking and birdwatching island, with marked trails across the interior and the Charkadio cave where fossilised dwarf elephants were found. The older settlement of Megalo Chorio sits inland, but Livadia is where the boats come in and where most of the beds are.

Around a dozen sailings a fortnight means most days have something in season, though not always at a convenient hour for a day trip. Current departures and fares are listed in the table below. Tilos sits on the chain between Nisyros and Rhodes, so it slots easily into a wider island-hopping run.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Kos?

Yes. The ferry port sits right in Kos Town, about 2km from the centre, a 20-25 minute walk or five-minute drive, with rental desks nearby. Buses run regularly between the main towns but thin out fast once you leave them, so a car is worth it if you want to reach the Asclepion, Mount Dikeos villages or the quieter beaches. Tips for the Kos to Tilos ferry

  • The harbour sits right beside the medieval Castle of the Knights, with ticket agencies lining the waterfront. For domestic sailings on Dodekanisos Seaways and Blue Star ferries, arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure to buy tickets and locate your berth.
  • If you are travelling on to Kalymnos, check which port is printed on your ticket – many sailings, including the frequent local car ferries, depart from Mastichari on Kos's north-west coast, not from Kos Town harbour.
  • Left-luggage lockers at Kos Town port are limited, so don't rely on finding one at short notice; pack light enough to carry your bags the short walk from the harbour into the old town yourself.
  • Third-party booking agents are useful for comparing multiple operators on the same route, but check their cancellation and change policies before paying.
  • Booking directly with the ferry operator's own website often gives you the same price as third-party sites and makes changes or cancellations simpler.
