Ferry from Fethiye (Turkey) to Rhodes (Rodos)

This is one of the standard Turkey-to-Greece hops, running from Fethiye on the Turquoise Coast across to Rhodes in about an hour and a half. Makri Travel operates it with the catamaran Sea Star Lindos, so it is a passenger-only service: no cars, and luggage allowances are tighter than on a conventional ferry. Passports are checked on both sides, so allow time at the terminal before departure.

You arrive in Rhodes Town, the main port and by some distance the biggest place in the Dodecanese. The medieval walled Old Town built by the Knights of St John starts a few minutes' walk from the quay, and the Mandraki harbour alongside it is the one associated with the ancient Colossus. Rhodes works as both a destination and a hub, with onward ferries to the rest of the Dodecanese, Crete and Piraeus.

The crossing generally runs about once a day in season and drops away sharply outside it, so check the dates carefully. Worth it if you're staying more than a couple of days, since the island is large and its two bus companies (Roda in the west, KTEL in the east) don't make it easy to combine both coasts in a day.
