Karpathos to Rhodes Route Map

Karpathos to Rhodes is the main link between the island and the rest of the Dodecanese, run by Blue Star Ferries with the Blue Star Chios. Depending on whether the ship calls at Chalki or Diafani on the way, it takes between about three and three quarter hours and four and a half. It is a conventional ferry with a restaurant, seating lounges and open deck, and the run past Chalki and the western Rhodes coast is a pleasant one.
Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese and the region's main hub, with a medieval Old Town built by the Knights of St John that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ships berth close to the walls, so you can walk into the Old Town within minutes of stepping ashore. Mandraki harbour, associated with the legendary Colossus, sits just to the north.
There are around three sailings a week in season, with the pattern thinning outside summer. The current timetable and fares are shown in the table below, with fares starting around €18. Rhodes has onward links to the rest of the Dodecanese, to Crete and to Piraeus, plus an international airport, which makes it the natural connecting point from Karpathos.

Hiring a car
Is it worth hiring a car in Rhodes?
Worth it if you're staying more than a couple of days, since the island is large and its two bus companies (Roda in the west, KTEL in the east) don't make it easy to combine both coasts in a day. The port is a 10-minute walk from Rhodes Old Town, with paid parking nearby. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.
Can you rent a car in Karpathos?
Yes, with desks in Pigadia near the port. It's worth it if you're staying several days: the drive north to Olympos, about 58km, runs along narrow, winding cliff roads that can turn genuinely windy, and buses only cover the main routes. For a short stay, buses and boat trips to the beaches are enough. Compare hire options at Discover Cars.

- Aircraft-style reserved seats cost a little more than deck class and are worth it on longer crossings if cabins are beyond your budget.
- The pet area on most ferries is outside, on the lower vehicle deck, which can be hot in summer – check the weather before booking a pet on a summer sailing.
- The meltemi wind, a strong north-north-westerly, blows across the central and southern Aegean from roughly July through to early September.
- Once you arrive in Rhodes, the medieval walled Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, with the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master as its centrepieces. Tsambika Beach on the east coast and the ancient hilltop site of Lindos are the island's other headline attractions.
