Gavdos to Paleochora takes between about three and a half and four and a half hours on the ANENDYK vessel Samaria, depending on whether the boat calls elsewhere on the way. It is the longest of the regular links off Gavdos and covers a good stretch of open Libyan Sea. The Samaria is a conventional ferry, so it carries vehicles as well as foot passengers.
Paleochora is a small port town on Crete's southwest coast, relaxed and slightly bohemian in feel, with a sandy beach on one side of its peninsula and pebbles on the other. A Venetian castle, Kastello Selino, sits on the headland above the town. It is the busiest of the south-coast ports and the main hub for the small ferries linking Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Gavdos, several of which have no road connection between them.
