Sougia to Paleochora takes between 35 and 45 minutes depending on the vessel, hugging a stretch of coastline with no road along it. The boats are small by ferry standards and the views of the cliffs are the main event.
Paleochora is the largest town on this coast, sitting on a low peninsula with a sandy beach on one side and a pebbly one on the other. It has a relaxed, end-of-the-road feel, a Venetian castle ruin on the headland above the town, and enough tavernas, rooms and shops to function as a proper base. It is also the western hub of the coastal boat network.
Boats run once or twice a day through the season, and the service is heavily weather-dependent, with cancellations in strong south winds. Current departures and fares are shown in the table below. From Paleochora there are onward sailings to Gavdos, and buses inland to Chania.

Tips for the Sougia to Paleochora ferry
- The upper open deck in summer is exposed to full sun; apply sunscreen before boarding and reapply if you spend more than an hour on deck.
- Pets must be kept in the designated pet area and may not enter passenger saloons; bring a lead and any food or water your pet needs for the crossing.
- Quick-dry travel towels pack much smaller than conventional towels and are worth the investment if you are covering multiple islands.
- If you want to avoid the worst of the meltemi, book morning departures from exposed Aegean ports in July and August – conditions are typically calmer before midday.
