Gavdos to Agia Roumeli takes around two and a half hours on the ANENDYK ferry Samaria, running northeast across open water to the foot of the Cretan mountains. It is a conventional coastal boat rather than fast craft, and it forms part of the south Crete network that links settlements the road does not reach. Gavdos itself is Europe's southernmost inhabited island, so this is the way back to Crete.
Agia Roumeli is a small settlement on Crete's south coast in Sfakia, hemmed in by the cliffs at the mouth of the Samaria Gorge and reachable only by boat or on foot. The harbour is a simple open jetty, and there is no road in or out. Most people passing through are gorge walkers finishing the hike and picking up a boat onward along the coast, so the village runs to tavernas and rooms rather than much else.
The link runs only a couple of times a week in season and not at all outside it. Current sailings and fares are shown below. From Agia Roumeli the coastal boats continue east to Loutro and Chora Sfakion, or west to Sougia and Paleochora, which is how most travellers move on.
