Heraklion to Kassos Route Map

Map of the south Aegean showing the ferry route east from Heraklion to Kassos.

The Blue Star Chios covers Heraklio to Kassos in around five hours, usually calling at Sitia in eastern Crete on the way. It is a conventional Blue Star ferry working the long line between Crete and Rhodes, so there are cabins, indoor seating and a vehicle deck. Kassos is the first Dodecanese call after leaving Crete.

Kassos is a small, bare island south of Karpathos and one of the least visited in Greece. The port and capital is Fry on the north coast, a modest harbour town with a few tavernas and rooms and not much else. Visitors come for genuinely quiet island life, a handful of beaches and the caves at Ellinokamara and Selai inland.

Sailings run a couple of times a week, and outside the summer the gaps widen considerably. The current timetable and fares are shown in the table below. Kassos also has a small airport with flights from Rhodes and Karpathos, which is the usual fallback when the ferry days do not line up.

Official maximum fares on subsidised sailings

These are ceilings set by ministerial decision for public-service (PSO) sailings, quoted net of VAT and port dues. They are the most an operator may charge on a subsidised departure, not a fare on sale, and they do not apply to commercial sailings on the same route.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Heraklion?

Yes. Heraklion's ferry port sits about 1km from the centre, an easy walk or short taxi ride, and several rental firms have desks right at the harbour or nearby in town. The city itself is compact enough on foot, but a car pays off once you want to reach Knossos, the south coast or the Lasithi plateau, where buses run less often. Check rates at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Heraklion to Kassos ferry

  • Arrive at Heraklion port at least 45 minutes before departure if you already hold an e-ticket – if you are travelling with a car, allow 60 to 90 minutes, as vehicles queue and board separately from foot passengers.
  • Buy your ferry ticket online in advance rather than at the port – ticket kiosks at Heraklion only open a few hours before each departure, and Santorini's high-speed services sell out in summer.
  • For the Santorini day-boats, SeaJets asks passengers to be at the terminal 30 minutes before sailing – expect heavy congestion and longer check-in queues on summer mornings.
  • Some operators offer promotional fares in spring and autumn to fill sailings – worth checking their websites directly if you are travelling outside peak season.
  • Many island businesses (restaurants, hotels, excursion boats) close entirely from October to April; factor this in before planning an off-season island stay.
