Kassos to Sitia Route Map

Map of the south Aegean showing the ferry route west-south-west from Kassos to Sitia.

Kassos to Sitia is the island's main link with Crete, covered both by Blue Star Ferries with the Blue Star Chios and by Manousos Georgios Shipping with the smaller Kasos Princess. Depending on the boat it takes between about two hours and two and three quarter hours. The Kasos Princess is a modest local vessel and the crossing can be bumpy in a strong meltemi, so pick your day if you can.

Sitia is a relaxed port town on the northeast coast of Crete, less touristy than Heraklio or Chania and with a traditional Cretan-town feel. The Venetian-era Kazarma fortress overlooks the waterfront. It makes a good base for eastern Crete, within reach of Vai palm beach, the Zakros archaeological site and quieter beaches along the coast.

Between the two operators there are around three sailings a week in season, which makes this the most dependable way off Kassos towards Crete. The current timetable and fares are shown below. Sitia has its own small airport and bus links west to Agios Nikolaos and Heraklio.

Official maximum fares on subsidised sailings

These are ceilings set by ministerial decision for public-service (PSO) sailings, quoted net of VAT and port dues. They are the most an operator may charge on a subsidised departure, not a fare on sale, and they do not apply to commercial sailings on the same route.

Hiring a car

Do you need a car in Sitia?

Yes, a car is genuinely useful here. Sitia sits about 130km, roughly two hours' drive, east of Heraklion, on the quieter side of Crete. A limited KTEL bus reaches the palm forest at Vai (28km) in summer, but a car gives easier access to Toplou Monastery and Sitia's beaches. Rental offices operate in Sitia town and at the small local airport; compare prices at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Kassos to Sitia ferry

  • Wheeled suitcases are harder to manage on steep gangways and across uneven quaysides than backpacks; a soft-sided bag with carry handles is a practical compromise.
  • If you are flexible on timing, the first sailing of the day is often less crowded than mid-morning departures on popular routes.
  • Sea spray on the bow deck can be significant in choppy conditions; keep your phone and camera in a pocket or bag until conditions are calm.
  • If you have a connecting ferry from the same port, check the departure board immediately on disembarking and confirm the gate for your next vessel.
