Lavrio to Kavala Route Map

Map of the north Aegean showing the ferry route north from Lavrio to Kavala.

Lavrio, the quieter of the Athens-area ferry ports, is linked to Kavala in northern Greece by Seajets and the Aquablue. This is a long passage, anywhere from around fourteen hours to over eighteen depending on which islands the ship calls at on the way. It is a working north Aegean line rather than a direct run, so plan for a night on board and book a cabin or at least a reserved seat.

Kavala is a full-scale port city in Eastern Macedonia, stacked up a hillside above its harbour. Behind the waterfront the Panagia old town keeps its Ottoman-era houses under a castle, and the Kamares aqueduct strides across the middle of the modern town. Arrivals are usually either staying to see the city and the ruins of Philippi inland, or carrying straight on to Thassos.

The service runs a few times a week rather than daily, and is at its fullest through the summer. Current departures, crossing times and fares are shown in the table below. Kavala has its own airport and the short crossing to Thassos, so it works well as a start or end point for a trip through the north Aegean.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car at Lavrio port?

Rental desks at Lavrio itself are scarce; the port is a working harbour about 60km southeast of Athens and roughly 40km from Athens airport, a 30-40 minute drive. Most people picking up a car for a Cycladic ferry from here collect it at the airport or in Athens beforehand, or arrange supplier delivery to the port; compare options at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Lavrio to Kavala ferry

  • The ship's tannoy system uses a chime before announcements; listen for the three-tone signal that precedes important information about arrivals or delays.
  • Smoking is not permitted inside ferry terminals or on board vessels in enclosed areas; designated smoking areas are usually at the stern on open deck.
  • If you plan to sleep on deck, bring a sleeping mat or extra layer beneath you – the metal deck gets cold overnight even in summer.
  • Outside cabins with portholes cost more but the natural light and view make a significant difference to how rested you feel on arrival.
