Loutro to Agia Roumeli takes around 30 to 50 minutes on the ANENDYK boats, the Daskalogiannis and Loutro Spirit, running westward along a coast with no road. The E4 path covers the same ground on foot, but it is a hot, exposed walk of several hours, so most people take the boat one way at least. The cliffs come right down to the water for much of the run.

Agia Roumeli sits at the mouth of the Samaria Gorge with cliffs closing in behind it, and can only be reached by boat or on foot. The village is a short strip of tavernas and rooms serving gorge walkers, with a long pebble beach and a plain jetty. It empties out noticeably once the last afternoon boats have gone.
