There is no road along this part of Crete's south coast, so the boat is genuinely the only mechanised way through. The run passes below sheer cliffs for most of its length.
Agia Roumeli sits at the mouth of the Samaria Gorge, hemmed in by cliffs and reachable only by boat or on foot.
