Ferry from Spetses to Hydra

Spetses to Hydra is the busiest island-to-island link in the Saronic, twenty minutes on a direct fast sailing and up to an hour or so on those calling at Ermioni. Hellenic Seaways, Alpha Lines and Magic Sea Ferries all run it with the Aero highspeed catamarans. Foot passengers only, which matters not at all since neither island permits ordinary motor traffic.

Hydra bans vehicles outright, so mules, donkeys and water taxis meet the boats on the quay. The horseshoe harbour lined with cannons and stone mansions climbing the hillside is the island's one real settlement and its centrepiece. Galleries and the long artists' tradition give the town a feel distinct from anywhere else in the gulf.

Departures run many times a day at the height of summer, which makes an easy day trip in either direction. Current timings and fares are shown below, with fares starting around €18. The same boats carry on to Poros and Piraeus, so it is simple to keep going north.

Tips for the Spetses to Hydra ferry

• A 40-litre backpack is the ideal size for island-hopping: large enough for two weeks' clothing, small enough to carry without difficulty.
• The meltemi typically peaks in the afternoons and can create significant swell; afternoon departures from exposed ports are more likely to be rough.
• Always cross-check your ticket details – date, vessel name, passenger count, and vehicle details – before the cancellation window closes.
• The ferry approach into a Greek island harbour is often the most beautiful part of the journey – get onto the bow deck 15–20 minutes before arrival.
• Once you arrive in Hydra, you'll find a car-free island with a picturesque stone-built harbour that has changed little in centuries. The island is best explored on foot or by donkey, with its neoclassical mansions, monasteries, and rocky swimming spots providing plenty to discover.
