Astypalea to Kastellorizo Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route east from Astypalea to Kastellorizo.

Astypalea to Megisti is one of the longest single ferry legs in the Aegean, run by Blue Star Ferries on the Blue Star Patmos and taking around thirteen hours. The ship works its way down the whole Dodecanese chain before making the final crossing east to Kastellorizo. This is an overnight-scale journey, so a cabin or at least a reclining seat is worth arranging.

Megisti is the official name of Kastellorizo, Greece's easternmost inhabited island, sitting just off the Turkish coast near Kas. The port town wraps around a small bay in a tier of pastel-coloured neoclassical houses, and the whole place is walkable in minutes. Travellers come for the harbourfront, the seafood tavernas and boat trips to the Blue Cave, and the island is known to many through the film Mediterraneo.

The direct sailing operates about once a week, and the current timetable and fares are shown below. Fares start around forty-three euros. Because of its isolated position, Kastellorizo's ferry links are long and infrequent, and Rhodes is the usual staging point, with flights and shorter boat excursions from Kas also serving the island.

Tips for the Astypalea to Kastellorizo ferry

  • The ship's cafeteria queue at dinner time on overnight ferries can be very long in peak season; eat early (first 90 minutes after departure) or very late.
  • Padlocking your main bag adds a layer of deterrence against opportunistic interference even though it is not a guarantee of security.
  • Return tickets on the same operator are sometimes cheaper than two separate one-way fares – compare both options before confirming.
  • On a sunny day, the sheltered lee side of the vessel (the side facing away from the wind) is the most comfortable spot on the outer deck.
  • On arrival at an island at dawn, the port area is quiet and taxis are few; if you need transport, arrange it in advance with your accommodation.
