Naxos to Egiali Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route east-south-east from Naxos to Egiali.

Naxos to Egiali is the run out to the northern end of Amorgos, and how long it takes depends entirely on which boat you catch. Blue Star Ferries covers it with the Blue Star Naxos in a little over two hours, while the Express Scopelitis of Small Cyclades Lines works its way round the Small Cyclades and can take five hours or more. The Scopelitis is a small local boat with a loyal following, and it is a proper island-hopping experience rather than a quick transfer.

Egiali is a relaxed, beach-oriented village on Amorgos's north coast, quieter and less built up than Katapola further south. The bay is ringed by hills with the traditional villages of Tholaria and Langada on the slopes above, and there are good walking trails linking them. Sandy beaches at Levrossos and Agia Anna are within easy reach of the harbour.

Between the two operators there is something most days in season, and the current timetable and fares are shown below. Deck fares start around €10, and it is worth noting that Amorgos has two ports, so check whether your accommodation is nearer Egiali or Katapola before booking.

Hiring a car

Is it worth hiring a car on Naxos?

Yes, it is worth it. Naxos is the largest Cycladic island, and its best beaches and mountain villages, Apollonas, Halki, the Tragaea, are 30 to 45 minutes' drive from Naxos Town. Rental desks sit right at the ferry quay, a one-minute walk from the bus terminal. Buses cover the main coast road, but a car gets you into the interior. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Naxos to Egiali ferry

  • Expect a short walk into town – Naxos port sits right at the edge of Chora, with shops, cafés and the Portara landmark only a few minutes away, so you will not need a taxi if your accommodation is central.
  • Arrive at least 45 minutes before departure and confirm your departure gate on the day, since Naxos is one of the busiest Cycladic ports, with several operators and vessels often docked at once.
  • If you are catching the Express Skopelitis local ferry to the Small Cyclades, it usually berths away from the main quay used by Blue Star and the high-speed ferries, so check where it is tied up when you arrive.
  • If you are travelling in winter, a compact rain jacket and a warm mid-layer are essential – the on-deck temperature can drop significantly on overnight crossings.
  • Do not leave valuables unattended in luggage – ferry saloons are busy places and opportunistic theft, while rare, does occur.
