Paros to Astypalea Route Map

Map of the Aegean showing the ferry route east-south-east from Paros to Astypalea.

Paros to Astypalea is a five-hour crossing on the Blue Star Naxos, the conventional ferry that runs the long line east from the Cyclades into the Dodecanese. It calls at islands along the way, so the time on board is broken up by harbours rather than spent on open sea throughout. Vehicles are carried, and there is seating, deck space and a canteen for the duration.

Astypalea is shaped like a butterfly and sits at the western edge of the Dodecanese, closer in feel to the Cyclades than to Rhodes or Kos. Boats dock at Skala, or Pera Gialos, directly below the Chora, with the Venetian kastro on the hilltop above dominating the view from the water. The island is quiet and whitewashed, popular with Greek visitors, and has an airport for domestic flights.

Sailings run a couple of times a week rather than daily, so this needs planning around. The current timetable and fares are shown below. Astypalea's other connections run east into the Dodecanese, which makes this route a useful way to cross between the two island groups without going back to Piraeus.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Paros?

Yes, and rental desks cluster right by the port in Parikia, most just a couple of minutes' walk from where the ferry docks. A car earns its keep here: nowhere on Paros is more than about 30 minutes' drive away, opening up marble-quarry villages and quieter southern beaches that the KTEL bus network doesn't reach directly. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars if you'd rather not rely on the bus timetable.

Tips for the Paros to Astypalea ferry

  • The whitewashed windmill facing the harbour is Parikia's landmark, useful for finding your way back to the terminal. Arrive at least an hour before departure in peak season, allowing extra time if you still need to buy your ticket at the port.
  • The KTEL bus station for onward island travel is immediately to the right as you exit the port, making it easy to find without asking directions. Buses to Naoussa, the airport, and beaches all depart from here.
  • Baggage storage is free at the KTEL bus station once you have bought your ticket, so there is no need to carry bags around Parikia while you wait for your ferry to board.
  • Paros is one of the busiest Cyclades hubs, so if you are changing ferries the same day build in a buffer – delays tend to build up through the day and afternoon sailings are more likely to run late.
  • Once you arrive in Astypalea, the main town's labyrinth of whitewashed houses, traditional windmills, and blue-domed churches beneath a hilltop Venetian castle make for one of the most photogenic settings in the Aegean. The island also offers miles of unspoiled beaches, with Vatses, Kaminakia, and Livadi among the finest.
