Patmos to Pythagorio Route Map

Map of the Aegean showing the ferry route north-east from Patmos to Pythagorio.

Patmos to Pythagorio on Samos is worked by Dodekanisos Seaways and SAOS Ferries, taking around an hour and a half on the catamaran and up to four hours on the slower boat. The route runs north along the Turkish coast and is one of the standard links between the Dodecanese and Samos. In season it is one of the more useful connections in this part of the Aegean.

Pythagorio is a small, relaxed port town on the south coast of Samos, named after Pythagoras, who was born on the island. The harbour is a mix of yachts and fishing boats with Logothetis Castle above it. Nearby are the ancient Heraion temple ruins and the Eupalinos tunnel, a UNESCO listed sixth century BC aqueduct driven straight through a hill.

The route runs several times a week in season, with a reduced pattern outside it. Current departures and fares are shown in the table below, starting around fifteen euros. Samos airport is very close to Pythagorio, which makes this a practical way of ending a Dodecanese trip.

Tips for the Patmos to Pythagorio ferry

  • Wi-Fi is available on board many Greek ferries but is often slow and unreliable; download maps, podcasts, and entertainment before you board.
  • The term 'gale warning' in a Greek maritime forecast typically means sustained winds of Force 7 or above; serious disruption to ferry services is likely.
  • Quick-dry travel towels pack much smaller than conventional towels and are worth the investment if you are covering multiple islands.
  • The Greek domestic ferry network runs year-round on most major routes – even in winter you can reach Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Crete by sea.
  • Avoid heavy meals immediately before boarding if you are prone to seasickness; a light snack is fine but a full taverna lunch is not ideal.
