Tilos to Symi Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route east-north-east from Tilos to Symi.

Tilos to Symi takes between about an hour and a half and two and a quarter hours depending on the boat. Blue Star Ferries runs the Blue Star Patmos through on its longer route, while SAOS Ferries covers it with the smaller Saonisos and Stavros. It is a short enough crossing to spend on deck, with the Dodecanese coastline in view for much of it.

Symi's harbour is the draw, with tiers of colourful Italianate mansions rising up the hillside above the waterfront, a legacy of the island's sponge-diving wealth. Most arrivals stay around Symi Town for the views and the seafood, and the Panormitis Monastery on the south of the island is the other main outing. It is a small island and gets busy with day trippers from Rhodes in the middle of the day.

There are several sailings a week in season across the two operators, enough to make this a practical hop rather than a planning exercise. The current timetable and fares are shown in the table below, with fares starting around €7.50. Symi has frequent onward links to Rhodes, so it works well as a stepping stone in that direction.

Tips for the Tilos to Symi ferry

  • If you have mobility issues, inform the ferry company in advance – assistance can be arranged for boarding and disembarkation at most major ports.
  • A short crossing gives you a very limited window to buy food on board; eat before you board or bring your own snacks.
  • Autumn schedule reductions typically happen in stages: first in late September, then again in late October – always check the timetable for your specific dates.
  • Short hops in the Dodecanese (e.g. Rhodes to Symi, or Kos to Kalymnos) pass through strikingly scenic straits – make sure your phone is charged for photos.
  • In Symi, the neoclassical mansions in shades of ochre, terracotta, and gold rising above the harbour of Gialos form one of the most striking port scenes in the Dodecanese. St Georges Bay on the island's east coast offers some of the best swimming in the area, and the island is a short ferry ride from Rhodes.
