Tilos to Kalymnos Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route north-north-west from Tilos to Kalymnos.

Tilos to Kalymnos takes between roughly three and a half and four and three quarter hours, worked by Blue Star Ferries on the Blue Star Patmos and by SAOS Ferries on the Saonisos and the Stavros. These are conventional ferries rather than fast craft, so there is deck space and room to move. The route runs north-west through the Dodecanese, usually calling at Nisyros or Kos on the way.

Ferries dock at Pothia, the capital of Kalymnos on the south coast, a busy working harbour with sponge shops and workshops close to the quay. The island built its living on sponge diving and still wears that history openly, and it is rugged and noticeably less touristed than Kos next door. In recent years Kalymnos has become a serious international rock-climbing destination, with the cliffs above Massouri busy through spring and autumn.

Sailings run three or four times a week across the operators, so there is a reasonable spread of options in season. The current timetable and fares are shown below, with fares starting around €11. Kalymnos has frequent short crossings to Kos, which has the nearest airport and the widest choice of onward ferries.

Tips for the Tilos to Kalymnos ferry

  • Fresh air almost always helps with sea sickness – going outside on deck and looking at the horizon is more effective than staying in an enclosed saloon.
  • If you are travelling with young children, bring their identity documents; crew are required to check ID for all passengers regardless of age.
  • The pet area on most ferries is outside, on the lower vehicle deck, which can be hot in summer – check the weather before booking a pet on a summer sailing.
  • In Kalymnos, world-class rock climbing routes in the island's limestone cliffs have made it a magnet for climbers from across Europe, while the sheltered pebbly beach of Vlychadia and other coastal spots offer superb swimming. The island also has a deep tradition as a sponge-diving centre, which still shapes its culture today.
