Lipsi to Symi runs the length of the middle Dodecanese, taking about three and a half hours on the Dodekanisos Express and up to seven and a half on the Blue Star Patmos, which calls at Leros, Kalymnos, Kos and Rhodes along the way. The gap between the two is substantial, so it is worth knowing which vessel you have booked before planning the rest of the day.

Symi's harbour is the draw, a bay ringed by tiers of pastel neoclassical and Italianate mansions rising up the hillsides, and ferries berth right in the middle of it. The island made its money from sponge diving and boat building, and the scale of the houses reflects it. Seafood along the waterfront is good, and the Panormitis Monastery on the south coast is a separate port call on some sailings.
