Kos to Kastellorizo Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route east-south-east from Kos to Kastellorizo.

Kos to Megisti, better known as Kastellorizo, is one of the longest single legs in the Dodecanese. Blue Star Ferries run it with the Blue Star Patmos and the journey takes around nine and a half hours, calling at a string of islands down the chain before turning east towards the Turkish coast. Fares start around twenty seven euros, which is modest for the distance covered.

Megisti is Greece's easternmost inhabited island, a small rock just off Kas in Turkey. The port town wraps around a small bay in a horseshoe of pastel neoclassical houses, and the island became widely known through the film Mediterraneo. Visitors come for the harbourfront itself, the seafood tavernas and boat trips out to the Blue Cave.

There are only a couple of sailings a week, and the length of the trip means arrival is often at an awkward hour, so check the current timetable and fares below before committing. Kastellorizo is also linked to Rhodes on shorter and more frequent services, which is the usual way in for most travellers.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Kos?

Yes. The ferry port sits right in Kos Town, about 2km from the centre, a 20-25 minute walk or five-minute drive, with rental desks nearby. Buses run regularly between the main towns but thin out fast once you leave them, so a car is worth it if you want to reach the Asclepion, Mount Dikeos villages or the quieter beaches. Tips for the Kos to Kastellorizo ferry

  • The harbour sits right beside the medieval Castle of the Knights, with ticket agencies lining the waterfront. For domestic sailings on Dodekanisos Seaways and Blue Star ferries, arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure to buy tickets and locate your berth.
  • If you are travelling on to Kalymnos, check which port is printed on your ticket – many sailings, including the frequent local car ferries, depart from Mastichari on Kos's north-west coast, not from Kos Town harbour.
  • Left-luggage lockers at Kos Town port are limited, so don't rely on finding one at short notice; pack light enough to carry your bags the short walk from the harbour into the old town yourself.
  • Some seasonal ferry routes only operate from late May to late September or early October – check whether your route is year-round before booking.
  • The bow (front) of the vessel experiences the most pitching in head-on swells; the stern tends to be smoother when seas are rough.
