Ferry from Kos to Agia Marina (Leros)

Kos to Agia Marina on Leros is a northbound catamaran and small-ferry run, served by Dodekanisos Seaways and ANEM with the Dodekanisos Express, the Dodekanisos Pride and the Olympios Ermis. The crossing takes around an hour on the direct fast services and up to about an hour and three quarters when there are calls at Kalymnos or Pserimos on the way. These are smaller, quicker vessels than the big Blue Star ships that use Lakki.

Agia Marina is the commercial heart of Leros, a working harbour town with Italian-era buildings around it including the clocktower and the covered market, left over from the 1912 to 1943 administration. The old town of Platanos and the Castle of Pandeli sit on the hill just above, within walking distance if you do not mind the climb. It is a quieter island than Kos or Patmos, with calm beaches and a good deal of wartime and Italian history.

With around twenty five sailings a fortnight this runs at least daily in season, often twice, which makes a day trip from Kos realistic. Yes. The ferry port sits right in Kos Town, about 2km from the centre, a 20-25 minute walk or five-minute drive, with rental desks nearby. Buses run regularly between the main towns but thin out fast once you leave them, so a car is worth it if you want to reach the Asclepion, Mount Dikeos villages or the quieter beaches. • The harbour sits right beside the medieval Castle of the Knights, with ticket agencies lining the waterfront. For domestic sailings on Dodekanisos Seaways and Blue Star ferries, arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure to buy tickets and locate your berth.
• If you are travelling on to Kalymnos, check which port is printed on your ticket – many sailings, including the frequent local car ferries, depart from Mastichari on Kos's north-west coast, not from Kos Town harbour.
• Left-luggage lockers at Kos Town port are limited, so don't rely on finding one at short notice; pack light enough to carry your bags the short walk from the harbour into the old town yourself.
