Ferry from Kos to Leros (Lakki)

Kos to Leros is a short northbound hop within the Dodecanese, handled by Blue Star Ferries and Superfast Ferries with the Blue Star 2, Blue Star Patmos and Lefka Ori. Crossings take between about an hour and a half and two and a half hours depending on whether the ship calls at Kalymnos on the way. These are big conventional ferries taking cars and lorries, so the sailing is steady and there is plenty of room aboard.

Ferries on this route dock at Lakki, the main port of Leros and one of the more unusual harbours in the Aegean. The buildings around the waterfront are 1930s Italian Rationalist and Art Deco, a legacy of the Italian administration, and they give the town a look nothing like the whitewashed Cycladic template. The island itself is quiet and understated, with the hilltop Castle of Pandeli above the old town of Platanos and the beach village of Agia Marina on the other side.

Yes. The ferry port sits right in Kos Town, about 2km from the centre, a 20-25 minute walk or five-minute drive, with rental desks nearby. Buses run regularly between the main towns but thin out fast once you leave them, so a car is worth it if you want to reach the Asclepion, Mount Dikeos villages or the quieter beaches. • The harbour sits right beside the medieval Castle of the Knights, with ticket agencies lining the waterfront. For domestic sailings on Dodekanisos Seaways and Blue Star ferries, arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure to buy tickets and locate your berth.
• If you are travelling on to Kalymnos, check which port is printed on your ticket – many sailings, including the frequent local car ferries, depart from Mastichari on Kos's north-west coast, not from Kos Town harbour.
