Ferry from Aegina to Athens (Piraeus)

Aegina to Piraeus is the busiest short-sea route in Greece, and the choice of boat decides the journey time. Hellenic Seaways' Aero 2 and Aero 3 high-speed catamarans cross in about 35 minutes, while the conventional ferries run by Saronic Ferries, Aegina Ferries, Olympian Ferries and others take up to an hour and a quarter. Aegean Flying Dolphins add hydrofoil sailings on top of that. The slower ships carry vehicles and cost less; the fast ones simply get you there.

Piraeus is the main port of Athens, a sprawling harbour with gates numbered E1 to E12 and one of the heaviest passenger throughputs in Europe. Saronic arrivals berth on the eastern side, close to the metro terminus that runs straight into the city centre and out to the airport with one change. Mikrolimano marina and the archaeological museum are both within walking distance if you have time to fill.

There are dozens of departures a day, effectively hourly or better from early morning to late evening, and the service holds up through winter. Yes, several agencies meet passengers directly at the ferry gates (E1 to E12), so there is no need to arrange transport into central Athens first. Do you need a car on Aegina?

Not really. Aegina is a popular day trip from Piraeus, and frequent buses run from the port in Aegina Town to Agia Marina, Perdika and the Temple of Aphaia, though services thin out to around five a day. Aegina Town itself is easily walkable.
