Ferry from Hydra to Athens (Piraeus)

Hydra to Piraeus is the busiest link on the island, worked by Hellenic Seaways, Alpha Lines and Magic Sea Ferries with the Aero highspeed catamarans. Direct sailings take a little over an hour; those calling at Poros and elsewhere along the way run to well over two. All of it is foot-passenger traffic, which suits Hydra since no cars are allowed on the island in any case.

Piraeus is the main port of Athens, a few kilometres from the city centre and one of the largest passenger ports in Europe. The metro terminus is right by the harbour and runs directly into central Athens, with a connection on to the airport. The port is spread across numbered gates E1 to E12, so it is worth knowing which one you dock at before you land.

Departures are frequent, many times a day through the summer and still regular out of season, so this is a route you can normally take on the day. Current timings and fares are shown below, with fares starting around €40. Most sailings also serve Poros, Ermioni and Spetses, so it is easy to break the journey.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Piraeus?

Yes, several agencies meet passengers directly at the ferry gates (E1 to E12), so there is no need to arrange transport into central Athens first. It suits travellers continuing on to the mainland rather than islanders, since central Athens is only 20 minutes away and has good metro and bus links. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.
